Examining the similarities between the Industrial Revolution and current technological developments
More Information (WCR FM is not responsible for external websites)
This body of work considers technical evolution by examining the similarities between the Industrial Revolution and current technological developments, in particular the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
During a residency programme with University of the Arts, London, Dosanjh researched hidden histories – specifically the stories of empire workers who migrated to the Black Country. He reveals narratives not featured in the gallery’s collection of 19th and 20th Century landscapes and questions what is missing from these images.
Technological innovations from this region gave the British Empire a significant edge in global extraction practices. Dosanjh asks; Is today’s technological innovation, with the computer chip as the modern foundry, set to repeat similar patterns? Will the digital system, due to inherent biases, marginalise certain cultures and realities as it absorbs information, overlooking what it does not see?
Dosanjh collaborated with software engineers to build a database of images including scans from the gallery’s permanent collection and ethically sourced images from his archives of mid-20th century workers. They meticulously tagged each image to train a machine learning model, which generated new visuals based on prompts from the residency and local anecdotes that Dosanjh wanted to see in image form. The resulting artworks are the product of careful experimentation while the technology used is timestamped as Summer 2024.
