Lesley Thorpe - Cancer Champions

The Chris Allen Podcast

Wednesday, 24 April 2024 - 13 minutes

Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with cancer. The earlier a cancer is detected, the better the outcome for the people involved and we know that talking about cancer helps to break down fears and barriers.

Cancer champions are volunteers who are equipped with the knowledge needed to raise awareness about cancer, engage in conversations that could help to reduce the risk of cancer and encourage early diagnosis of cancer, when treatment could be simpler and more successful.

Hosted by Cancer Research UK and the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board, our cancer champion training programme will give participants the knowledge and confidence to have conversations in their community about cancer prevention, myth busting and early diagnosis as well as addressing health inequalities.

The training will take place over three separate sessions, which are each two hours long, via Microsoft Teams. You must be available to attend all three sessions to complete the training. The sessions will be delivered and supported by local GPs and local cancer screening leads.

The next sessions are:

  • Cancer Champion Session 1- Let’s Talk Cancer; Thursday 16 May, 9.00am-11.00am
  • Cancer Champion Session 2- The 3 Screening programs; Thursday 13 June, 9.00am - 11.00am
  • Cancer Champion Session 3 – Networks /Signposting; Thursday 11 July, 9.00am - 10.30am

The course in the Autumn will be on the 3rd October, 17th October and 7th November (all 1pm - 3pm on Teams).
