Tettenhall Operatic Company are pleased to present ‘A Trio of Sullivan’.  Three comic operetta comprising Cox and Box, The Zoo and Trial by Jury. All with music by Arthur Sullivan.

Cox and Box is a one-act comic operetta that premiered in 1866 and was Sullivan’s first successful comic opera with the libretto being written by F. C. Burnand. The story tells of a landlord who lets a room to two lodgers, one who works nights and one who works during the day. When one takes a day off work they meet in the room and tempers flare.

The Zoo is a one-act comic operetta that premiered in 1875 and was Sullivan’s first collaboration with librettist B. C. Stephenson. This musical folly concerns two pairs of lovers. First, a nobleman, who goes to the zoo to woo the girl who sells snacks to the visitors. He tries to impress her by buying and eating all of the food. The other couple is a young chemist who believes he has poisoned his beloved by mixing up her father’s prescription with peppermint that he had meant for her.

Trial by Jury is a one-act comic operetta that premiered in 1875 and was Gilbert and Sullivan’s second collaboration. It is a satirical take on a breach-of-promise lawsuit.
